Metade dos casos de síndrome de morte súbita de lactentes no Reino Unido está relacionada ao hábito de alguns pais de dividir as camas com os filhos, de acordo com um estudo da Universidade de Bristol, publicado no site do “British Medical Journal”.
Grande parte do risco está associada ao consumo de álcool ou cigarro dos pais, ou ao uso de sedativos antes de dormir.
Muitas das mortes ocorreram quando pais e filhos dormiram juntos em um sofá.
Apesar de as taxas de síndrome de morte súbita terem caído dramaticamente no Reino Unido desde uma campanha de saúde pública no início dos anos 90, ainda é necessário aconselhamento específico para ajudar a reduzir ainda mais essas mortes, afirmam os pesquisadores da Universidade de Bristol.
“Os pais precisam ser aconselhados a nunca se colocar em uma situação em que possam pegar no sono com um bebê pequeno no sofá.”
Os pais também jamais devem dormir com um bebê em um ambiente em que tenham consumido álcool ou drogas, aconselhou a equipe.
Mas os autores do estudo ressaltaram que, ainda assim, alguns pais ainda querem dividir a cama com os filhos, em particular se eles precisarem amamentar os bebês várias vezes durante a noite, e que essa prática não deve ser vista como totalmente errada.
Mas é preciso lembrar que ela pode provocar cansaço nos pais que, durante o dia, correm o risco de cochilar no sofá com os filhos, alertam os pesquisadores.
Um outro estudo, feito pela Fundação para o Estudo da Morte de Bebês (FSID, na sigla em inglês), mostrou que 125 das 500 mães entrevistadas ainda duvidam que dormir ao lado de seus bebês pode ser um grande fator de risco.
A diretora da FSID, Joyce Epstein, disse que as conclusões do estudo são alarmantes.
“Sabemos que as que formam o maior grupo de risco são mães muito jovens, geralmente solteiras, ainda na adolescência, e são também as que mais rejeitam conselhos sobre formas seguras de dormir.”
Ninguém sabe exatamente quais são as causas da síndrome da morte súbita do lactente, mas alguns fatores de risco – como posição durante o sono e temperatura do ambiente – foram identificados.
Em um quinto dos casos de morte súbita – também conhecida como morte do berço – o bebê dormia com um travesseiro, e em um quarto dos casos, o bebê estava enrolado nas cobertas, o que podem ser novos fatores de risco, dizem os autores.
Mas, em um outro estudo, 25% das mães entrevistadas pela Fundação para o Estudo da Morte de Bebês (FSID, na sigla em inglês), disseram não acreditar que dormir na mesma cama põe em risco a vida do bebê.
